Hello, Microsoft tells me to "go and play with my computer" !! what the hell kind of contact and respect is that? Someone from microsoft (boy I wish he told me his name) calls me and asks for to verify my information because I am listed as the contact person for my company. I was not aware that I was listed as a contact person for my company, and asked the person for what reason/agreement am I listed as a contact person for. He just stated there is no agreeement. I enquired somemore and stated my concern that I think the information may be incorrect or they have the wrong contact person because I knew my company did have a Solutions Providers agreement with Microsoft, but I didn't think I should be the contact person for this. He stated that emails would be sent to me and needed to verify my information. I stated again my concern about me might not being the right contact person. He said he would just delete me then as the contact person. I stated that it would not be a good idea to not have any contact person and would be irresponsible to just delete it. So again I asked what kind of service/agreement was the Contact Person for so I can find out more informatino from my company. Then he just tells me to "go and play with my computer" and hangs up. Whatever.. what kind of people does microsoft hire to represent them? that really pissed me off. jimmy reza -- --------------------------------- * Best FREE Online Devotional * * http://www.EMANNA.com * ----------------------------------

Microsoft or IBM they are all the same. I had troubles communicating with them at several and different occasions, and they are only guided by greed. Any question, (even the time of day) and they say they will have to charge you! (I'm kidding about the time of day) but it could well be the same. I am so disgusted with them both, ( with plenty of reasons) that I decided to stay away from them. They are playing ball, in the sense, one will tell you it's a software problem, and the other will tell you it's an hardware problem. Next time, I'll buy anything but IBM, and try to stay away from Microsoft! Fed up! John.-

SGI has been an excellent alternative for prepress and graphics. They pulled the same thing with a number of fairly large corporate accounts in Atlanta and I suspect that the memory lingers in some of the fortune 500 that call Atlanta home. Now that Jobs is pushing corporate use, again, it will be interesting to see if that memory comes back and bites him in the Apple. On the BG Windoze front. What is so complicated with this antitrust business? The real issue is that consumers have been forced to purchase Windoze for years as a result of agreements between PEECEE manufacturers and MS. How many of you paid for a PEECEE with Windoze because the vendor would not remove it. Was this Windoze you had to take free? Alternative OS vendors are screwed from the get go when the OS and the hardware are bundled. There is no competition when there is no market and with the majority of PEECEE consumers there is no need to even consider another OS when something that kinda sorta works comes 'free' with their hardware. A can of worms waiting to be opened is the degree to which PEECEE manufacturers participated in the Windoze scam by jumping on the only train to Oz. If the Windoze they shipped was free of cost to them where does that place them in scheme? Partners? -bob Topical material follows. WTS: Linus workstation. Then you've done yourself a disservice. Apple has made mistakes. The "Mac XL" was perhaps one of them. BTW, I bought a Lisa - as a platform (the only one then available) on which to do Mac development. When the Mac Plus came out, I sold the Lisa/XL and bought a Mac Plus. I'm now on my 6th or 7th Mac, and my biggest objection to it is that I can't run MacOS and MKLinux simultaneously on the same box. ;-) >SGI has been an excellent alternative for prepress and graphics. But a bit more expensive than Macs, ain't it? I don't want to get in a flamewar over which system is better - IMO that's a personal decision, and if you choose SGI, or some other hardware, or some flavor of Unix/Linux, or some other OS, that's fine with me. You should do what works for you. Mac works for me, that's all. :-) -- Ed Reppert Rochester, NY, USA

Bob and any other concerned parties: I used to work for a PC manufacturer in a previous life. As part of the bundle the systems were sold with Windows. Talking to the product manager at the time, I asked about bundling either OS/2 or Unix with some of the machines. He stated that the licensing agreement with Microsoft required royalties on every PC that left the shipping dock, whether it was loaded or not, or even included in the box. In return, the Windows licensing fee was extremely low. This was the situation that lead to the first court case between the DOJ and Microsoft, and the consent decree was a result of that case. Whether Microsoft is doing something illegal right now is the subject of the current court case. I do know that the licensing fees for subsequent versions of Windows have increased substantially. How many of you paid for a PEECEE with Windoze because the >vendor would not remove it. Sorry, but this thread is way off topic. Obviously, the anti-trust arguments are sufficiently complex to confuse most people. Nobody is *forced* to use Microsoft, even if your PC dealer soiled the hard disk of your new computer with Mocrosoft's products. The *only* issue these days (there was some confusion in the past) concerning anti-trust regulations is competition. Specifically, through it's actions, has Microsoft compromised competition and so caused software prices for the consumer to increase, and is there a potential for Microsoft to exploit its market position in the future to reduce competition? On one front, it is obvious; Microsoft has been steadily eliminating its competition. On another front, it is not at all so obvious; nobody can claim that Microsoft's basic operating software is too expensive, especially if you get to for free when you buy your computer. The issue is a thorny one for lawyers and economists alike. It is hardly understood at all by computer experts. (For a start, the issue is not monopoly, and not market dominance.) The latter is not nearly so clear as computer prices have been, as it were, falling through the floor. There are now $500 PCs, and we haven't seen that since the 8 bit days. There is the *appearance* that you "get it for free" when you buy a computer; it should be manifestly obvious that the vendors have got to be paying MSFT *something* for the privilege of including W95/NT in a computer "bundle." The "revolt" may occur as the MSFT portion of the sale price starts to rise as the total price falls... -- Those who do not understand Unix are condemned to reinvent it, poorly. -- Henry Spencer <http://www.hex.net/~cbbrowne/lsf.html> cbbrowne@hex.net - "What have you contributed to Linux today?..."

However, they are charged for the micro$oft products whether they use
them or not. This is precisely what micro$oft agreed not to do whne
they signed the consent decree with Ann Bingamon.

Sorrry, but NOTHING is FREE where IBM or Microsoft are concerned. What seems like a (free) gift when you buy yourself a computer, is in fact being paid many times over when making the purchase. I did my apprenticeship with Commodore as a Technician in the days of the PET before the 64. I remember the excitement when we got the Prototype (of the 64) to play with back in the early 80's.... Man, those were the days.... You really had to know your stuff in those days to be an expert... not like these days where anyone who installs a video card and the software, upgrades themselves to Technician Status...
