At long last, NNMVS Version 3 is available from the usual sources.
Some of the new features are:
Newsgroup article management is radically different, which should
result in improvements in response time and memory usage, as well
as avoiding out-of-memory abends and handling large blocks of
expired articles more gracefully.
A new pseudo-browse interface replaces the BRIF code, enabling
a greater variety of commands while browsing a news article.
The PRT command is implemented, similar to EXTRACT except that it
prints to the SYSOUT class of your choice. (ISPF mavens know why
I couldn't call it PRINT.)
You have the option of letting the cursor remain next to the most
recently selected newsgroup or article.
New commands to simplify debugging have been added.
Additional installation-time customization for different levels
of ISPF.
Miscellaneous bug fixes and feature tweaks.
How to Get NNMVS
Anonymous FTP access
NNMVS may be obtained via anonymous FTP to ftp.uni-stuttgart.de under
the directory /soft/comm/news/beginner/software/nnmvs.
The file name is distrib.cntl.v3r1.
Note: this used to be /soft/kommunikation/news/beginner/software/nnmvs
but "kommunikation" has been replaced by "comm".
Also, U.S. users see below for FTP instructions.
BITNET/NJE access
USC's "MVS network server" code distribution service can send MVS
software via BITNET or email, and can also make things available
via anonymous FTP. To get NNMVS, you send an email message to
SERVICE@MVSA.USC.EDU - or SERVICE@USCMVSA, which will normally give
better results if you have a BITNET (NJE) return address.
To have NNMVS sent to you, send mail with the following message body:
GET TSOCMD/NNMVS.PACKAGE
You may wish instead to use the MAKEFTP command, which will create
short-lived datasets which you can then retrieve via anonymous FTP
from MVSA.USC.EDU.
Before doing either of the above, you should read the help, which
discusses how things are handled depending on whether you have an
NJE address or just a plain email return address. Send mail with
the following in the message body:
HELP
HELP GET
HELP MAXMAIL
Read the information on how to use the service. Pay particular
attention to the note about MAXMAIL, since mailings tend to be large.
INDEX will tell you what other items you can retrieve via this service.
NNMVS-L Mailing List
You can subscribe to the LISTSERV mailing list NNMVS-L, maintained at
VM.USC.EDU. To get on this list, send mail to LISTSERV@USCVM (or
LISTSERV@VM.USC.EDU) with the following line in the message body:
SUBSCRIBE NNMVS-L firstname lastname
Please keep in mind that further requests (e.g. to unsubscribe from
the list) must be sent to the LISTSERV address, *not* to the list.
The response you'll get from the SUBSCRIBE message will tell you
about this and more - so be sure to save it.
Thanks To...
All the beta testers: Leonard Woren, Denis DeLaRoca, Dale Ingold,
and anyone else whom I may have neglected to mention.
