My wife is an public elementary school teacher in Suitland, MD (next to
the DC border) in a school that has implememnted dress codes (uniforms)
last year. She says the change in behavior overall has been very
positive. Not dramatically, as discipline problem children are still
that way. However she says two things I find interesting:

1) There are less distractions in the classroom school-wide, evidenced
by the improved behavior.

2) Many children, especially the poor ones, are proud of their new
clothes. Perhaps the soceital exclusion these children felt brought on
by others' fancy clothes has been eliminated.

Most parents have been very supportive of the move to uniforms. I
imagine it makes life easier for them.
