I hope that you all will not mind me entering this conversation. J.M. Ivler wrote: > If PARENTS took responsibility to teach their kids ethics and values > schools could go back to teaching the basics. The schools are in trouble > because the parents have stopped parenting. This statement is undeniably true. But what can a school dealing with hundreds or thousands of parents do about it. The school cannot throw up its hands and say that the parents are failing so we can do nothing. Anyone with this attitude would never have entered the teaching profession. So the question is not whether parents should do a better job. Obviously they should. But the question is whether or not school uniforms and/or dress codes improve the learning environment for all the students. Studies could be conducted which prove or disprove the thesis "Dress Codes improve morale and learning environment". But I'm not sure that studies are terribly necessary for action to occur . In this case common sense and the experience of educators would seem to be sufficient unless disproved by studies being conducted concurrently. After all, even if dress codes and/or uniforms don't help. They are unlikely to do any lasting damage. Dale Switzer
