What is the current penalty in NJ for driving an insured car? Aside from it
not being a smart thing to be doing should you get in an accident, what
else will happen?

I believe it's about a $ 300.00 fine, you may also lose your liscence
as well as get an insurance surcharge for abot 3 years.

[ assuming that means UNinsured ]

BAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Excuse me! :-) I cant help but laugh.

You see. April 1 of 1992, I was wondering that same such question. I found
out pretty hard.

First, minimun 1 years loss of license. Next, about $300 or more in fines
(mine was just under $400, including $25 for expired inspection). And
finally, some sort of community service. For me that was 24 hours at
the local hospital. Thats 4 saturdays at 7 hours a day

Lastly, and this point I dont know exact, is a surcharge. I paid $30
to reinstate my license April 1 1993, but dont know what the surcharge
will be. For instance, DWI is $1000/3 years, so Im guessing about
$350 or towards that effect.

Now. The 1 year loss is mandatory. Dunno about the fine and service,
I think thats up to the judge. The surcharge is mandatory also, but
talk to me April 2 1993 and Ill let you know :-)

Next. If you dont get caught, and you do get in an accident, leave
the country. Europe sounds good. Why? I cant say for sure, but jail
time is a definate. God help you if the person is injured, or dies.
Most likely youll be charged with manslaughter/murder or attempted
thereof.

If you are driving without insurance, the only thing I can say is:
DONT! Go out right NOW and get it. I dont care if you dont have
money (as my situation was, but I could have gotten money if it
wasnt for pride stopping me from asking). If you dont get insurance,
Ill met you on the Morris County Metro Bus Line, route #10. And
let me tell you, there are some very disturbing people who ride
the buss...

This is what I needed to know. A friend of mine has been driving around
without insurance. (Forgot to renew the policy and now doesn't "have time"
to go to the agent and get a new one.) I told him that NJ was cracking down
on uninsured drivers. Maybe this info will force him to "find the time".

Jailtime *regardless* of the type of accident? Of course, being _insured_ has
never stopped anyone from being charged with manslaughter/murder if they were
at fault. Being uninsured certainly will not go in your favor, however.
Leaving the scene of an accident just makes a bad matter even worse.

I going to show this to my friend. Hopefully, the experience of others will
will convenience him!
