The real objection to self-service comes from the independent station owners.
They feel that if the major franchise stations are allowed to have
self-service lanes, the big companies who own them will drop prices FURTHER
and drive the independents out of business.

Another justification for the self-service ban -- I have no idea if
this is fact or not, just another possible reason -- is security. Not
of the customers, but of the attendants. Allegedly the lone cashier in
the booth gets robbed more often?

I don't really give a damn. The prices being low in NJ -- as another
poster pointed out -- have to do with taxes and little else. I will
not wait for the clods, and I usually get out and pump my own damn gas
anyway. Ninety percent of the attendants don't care -- it saves them
work. The other ten percent, if they tell me to wait for them, and
they're taking forever, I leave and find another station.

Pumping your own also avoids the problem that occurs when the pump
stops at $9.21, and the attendant wants to push it up to an even $10
and pumps $.50 or so worth of gas all over the side of your car.

What's a cashier? I'm used to pumps with card-readers on them.

Which it isn't.
