Als je Red Hat 6.1 gebruikt kanb het aan de instellingen voor de parallelle
poort liggen.
Op de RedHat site wordt daar melding over gemaakt in de errata voor lpr:

Als je problemen hebt met lokaal printen in Red Hat linux 6.1 zorg er voor
dat je:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc

in je /etc/conf.modules file hebt staan
