I tried to install imagemagick on OS X 10.3, but due to an electricity
failure ..

On unix you can type
make clean

but now, I can delete in fink (graph) or command line
fink remove etc
but it does not find any binary and its gone..

I think somewhere fink kept some file while execing in the terminal ..
say a .o that is broken ...

How can I successfull install this
(I would like from source)

Just remove the /sw/ directory. Fink does not touch anything else on the
computer. Then just reinstall.

Is Fink the /only/ app that puts files in the sw directory? I want to
delete that directory to install a new version of Fink, but have been
afraid to do so lest some of the files belong to other apps.

Thanks,

That is *EXACTLY* why fink uses the /sw directory - so that it won't
interfere with other things and they won't interfere with it. Of course,
an app that is either malicious or sufficiently stupid (if one can tell
the difference :-)) can do almost anything, but other apps *SHOUDLN'T*
be putting things in /sw.

The /sw/ directory is a Fink invention, and no other installation has any
reason to put stuff there. Under BSD, it is traditional to put packages
that do not come with the (Mac OS X) installation in /usr/local/ (put the
sources in /usr/local/src/). These are just conventions, though.

That's rather drastic to fix the installation of just one package :)

To fix fink itself first you could try:

fink reinstall fink

Then try to install your package again. If the problems persist, I
recommend posting your question on the fink users mailinglist
(http://fink.sourceforge.net/lists/fink-users.php). Most fink developers
read it, so you'll have a better chance to get a useful answer.

hth,

- Koen.

Sorry, I thought it was Fink self that failed to install (which I was
working with right now). The FinkCommander has several menu items one can
try.
