TWO ASPECTS OF INTERPRETATION IN WEAK-THEORY DOMAINS: SITUATION
UPDATING FROM REPORTS AND ROBUST RECOGNITION OF SPATIO-TEMPORAL PLANS

The first project consists in maintaining an updated representation
of a naval situation as described by daily reports in English. Hybrid
representation is used to combine logic parsing and object-oriented
semantics. Background knowledge is a hierarchy of persistent objects
of the domain (places, ships and action types). Each report typically
describes an `event', which is part of a single `activity'
corresponding to an instance of the relevant type of action. Demon
mechanisms are used to trigger cross-updating.

In the second study, the activity of the agents is given at a low
level of description: the behavior of an imaginary car driver is
tracked in terms of position, speed, etc, instead of self-contained
actions. Domain knowledge is a hierarchy of plans describing the
points of view of the agent (planning) and of the observer
(recognition). Plausible plans are activated through the satisfaction
of logical conditions on the parameters. The credit assigned to each
of the active plans evolves according to the adequacy or discrepancy
of the input relative to its normal range of values for the plan.

Jean-Francois Delannoy studied English, linguistics and computer
science, and completed his PhD last year in Marseilles. He is
currently a fellow researcher at ITK, and will join the MaLTe project
on acquisition and learning from text, at the University of Ottawa.
