PARTIAL LOGIC AND ITS APPLICATIONS TO LANGUAGE AND KNOWLEDGE
Partial logic, the logic related to partial semantics, can be
fruitfully applied to natural language and knowledge representation.
In partial semantics the classical truth value (true or false) of a
proposition may be undetermined, or even overdetermined. These
possibilities can be represented by new truth values: `undetermined'
and `overdetermined'. At least for the `nonsense' interpretation of
undetermined there is a clear application to linguistics, viz. on
presupposition phenomena. For the `unknown' interpretation, the area
of knowledge representation (both in the philosophical and in the
computational sense) provides fertile soil.
After a short and easy introduction into partial logic we will turn
to the applications. Part of the results are based on the speaker's
dissertation.
Elias Thijsse studied mathematics, general linguistics and
philosophy at Groningen University. At present he is a lecturer in the
department of Language and Literature of Tilburg University. He
recently graduated on a thesis entitled `Partial Logic and Knowledge
Representation' (Eburon, Delft 1992, ISBN 90-5166-267-X).
