and Other Countries of the Former USSR
Sergei D. Kuznetsov
Institute of Cybernetics Problems
Russian Academy of Sciences
The author is the system programmer with more than 20-years experience in
the fields of operating and database management systems. He is thus
familiar with the history of xSU system programming and computers. This
history is relatively rich and large and the talk is dedicated mostly to
the projects that are more concerned with the author's own work.
The first topic is the famous Russian computer BESM-6. This computer was
designed at the end of 60s and was used for solving scientific and industry
tasks for more than 25 years. There existed several operating systems and
many compilers for BESM-6 designed in different institutes (including DDR
Academy of Sci.)
The second topic is the distributed data processing system AS-6 designed
at the end of 70s and used for many years in the Center of Space Flights
Control. The author was one of the designers of the distributed operating
system for AS-6.
The third topic is the direction of Russian IBM and DEC compatible
computers. In the author's opinion it was the begining of the end of
Soviet computers.
The fourth topic is the xSU supercomputers: Elbrus, Electronica-SSBIS etc.
The final topic is the current state of xSU computer and programming
efforts. It may be called: Looking for integration.
