About Two Projects of System Software
Sergei D. Kuznetsov
Institute of Cybernetics Problems
Russian Academy of Sciences
This talk is about the two most interesting projects (at least for the
author) at the department of system programming at ICP.
The first project is the project of the CLUSTOS (CLUSter Operating System).
CLUSTOS is the object-based portable operating system based on the concept
of asynchronous clusters. Clusters communicate through asynchronous
messages interchanging and encapsulate their implementation and the way of
synchronization. The intercommunication between each pair of clusters is
protected through special CLUSTOS kernel facilities. The second important
concept of CLUSTOS is the concept of subsystem - statically defined set of
clusters and subsystems with statically defined connections. Subsystem is a
unit of loading in CLUSTOS environment. There are special facilities for
subsystem design. The basic languages of CLUSTOS are CCLOS (C extension
for clusters programming) and PROCLOS, the language of subsystem design.
The second project is Free SQL-Server, designed as a part of GNU project of
Free Software Foundation. Really this project was begining inside CLUSTOS
project. Later the programs were ported to the UNIX environment. The
kernel of the SQL-server is the subsystem for data and transaction
management. Some new solutions were used for transaction serialization,
logging and so on. Sophisticated techniques are used for query optimization
inside the SQL-compiler.
