aanmelden tot 4 december as.

		SION Databasedag --- 11 december 1992

	   Vakgroep Informatica, Rijksuniversiteit Leiden

	(Zaal 1, Collegebouw Faculteit W & N, Einsteinweg 55)

10.30 -- 10.55 Ontvangst met koffie

10.55 -- 11.00 Verwelkoming

11.00 -- 11.30 A general theory for the evolution of application domains
	       H.A.Proper (KUN)

In this presentation we focus on evolving information systems.
First a delimitation of the concept of evolution is discussed.
This is followed by a discussion on a first attempt to a general theory
for such evolutions, and a general study on the issue of
 type relatedness of object types.
In this theory, the underlying data model is a parameter,
making the theory applicable for a wide range of modeling techniques.

11.30 -- 12.00 Een grammatica voor regels in taalgerichte informatie-analyse
	       H. Schouten (RULimburg)

	       Hennie Steenhagen (UTwente)

12.45 -- 13.45 Lunch

14.00 -- 15.00 De identificatie van objecten en rollen
	       Wiebren de Jonge (VU)

We investigate several concepts that are known in database
research for some time but which are still surrounded by some confusion.
We start with the concepts of object identifier,
surrogate and key and list the differences between these concepts,
which in practice are often ignored.
Sharpening these differences allows us to analyze the
distinction between objects and roles that recently
 surfaced in the literature.
Distinguishing objects from roles helps to avoid migration of objects
between classes and thus the problems associated with it.
We show that this distinction requires the use of
role identifiers that, just as object identifiers, should
 be globally unique and unchangeable.
We next show that using role identifiers requires a distinction between
two essentially different kinds of inheritance
relationships, IS-A inheritance and PLAYED-BY inheritance.
These are often both treated as if they were one
and the same kind of IS-A relationship.
The result of the discussion is a set of clear modeling concepts, which are
independent of a particular language or implementation.

15.00 -- 15.30 Koffiepauze

15.30 -- 16.00 Interoperability and Access Control - Problems and Approaches
	       Burkhard Lau (TUDelft)

Interoperable systems are able to work together in order to accomplish certain
tasks. Closely coupled with the design of an interoperable working system the
aspects of access control are also difficult to solve. This is caused by such
 requirements:

  * the involved subsystems should keep their autonomy, in particular an own
    access control.
This leads to conceptual problems, because there are maybe different
policies and mechanisms (MAC and/or DAC, DAC implemented by views
and/or query modification, to compare different security levels in MAC-
    implementations etc.)
  * a global access control is needed.
There are practical problems to distribute a global access control system.

Based on a Five-Level-Architecture for federated systems, I want to propose an
approach for getting a global access control system by mapping local access
 control policies in several steps.

16.00 -- 16.30 Data Storage in the Goblin Database Management System
	       Sander Plomp (CWI)

The Goblin database management system, currently being developed at
the CWI in Amsterdam, has an unusual approach to low level data storage.
Rather than using record-wise storage, fully decomposed storage is used.
It is expected that, in a distributed setting, this has some advantages.
One of the advantages is that it becomes easier to have an adaptive
storage format that changes its internal format automatically to give
 the best performance.

The talk will discuss the organization of data storage in Goblin and
the potential advantages of adaptive storage techniques for databases.

16.30 -- 17.00 Lexicons: a Linguistic Approach to Data Dictionaries
	       Hans Burg (VU)

Data Dictionaries contain crucial information about the (technical) meaning
of words used in a company. In linguistics a lexicon contain syntactic and
semantic information about words used in the society. We have studied the
possibility to structure a Data Dictionary if it were a lexicon. The
results of the study were applied to the large Data Dictionary of GAK. It was
possible to generate Natural Language (Dutch) sentences from the
definitions of the words in the lexicon, replacing the fixed strings
originally put in the Data Dictionary.
