UNDERSTANDING AND EXTENDING DYNAMIC SEMANTICS
`Dynamic semantics' (in the sense of, say, DRT and DPL) is presented
from the point of view of `static' semantics (e.g., first-order
logic). The idea is to pass from a static conception of a proposition
A as a set of contexts (validating A) to a dynamic interpretation of A
as a binary relation on contexts (describing transitions A induces).
This passage amounts conceptually to a shift from evaluating A against
some context to constructing some context on the basis of A. While
this shift can be analyzed abstractly in terms of suitable
mathematical structures, the talk will focus more concretely on finer
points concerning translations of first-order formulas into programs.
Motivated (in part) by linguistic considerations, special attention
will be given to alternative (`truly dynamic') accounts of negation,
implication and universal quantification.
Tim Fernando completed his doctoral dissertation last year in
California under S. Feferman and J. Barwise on the foundations of
situation theory (`broadly conceived'). He has been a member, since
July 1991, of J. van Eijck's group at CWI, investigating parallels
between natural and programming languages.
