Hey there... I was hoping someone out here can help us out... We're running a Netware 4.11 server on a dual PII-350mhz machine, 384mb SDRAM, Adaptec RAID w/ 3 4.5gb Cheetah's, and 1 10mbs Acer & 3 100mbs 3Com NIC's... This server's soul purpose is to serve files to a maximum of 200 diskless workstations running Win95 (remoteboot). It's been running since Sept. 1998 with a few problems but overall it's been good. Here's the problem. On occasion the server will freeze (total freezeup, must be turned off then on again), for no apparent reason. The logs don't show any tampering, the server is locked up in the server room, and there is no major load whatsoever on it within 30 minutes prior to the lockup... We've had anything from 150 people working with heavy apps to 5 people poking around on the internet and it's frozen. We're basically totally out of ideas. Oh, and just to note the equipment is brand new and has been tested at 100% ok (but maybe Netware doesn't like it?). If anyone can lend us a hand in figuring this out we would be immensly appreciative. If you'd like any more details please mail me and I'll get them to you as soon as possible. Thanks in advance... You need to run a sniffer. Sounds like a chattering NIC. Just 1 machine with a badly chattering NIC can blow everthing. Why are you using the server as a router with 3 NICs? You should also load managewise or openview, and monitor the network as a whole. I'll bet you need to add 1 or two servers and do load balancing. Are your volumes set up correctly? You could add two servers, a switch, and all required software for less than $25,000 and be very happy. The increase in bandwidth from the switch will make your users happy, the management software will make you happy, load balancing will make everyone happy, and depending on your enterprise license with Novell, you may not need to buy additional connections. BTW, running a raid with 3 drives is not smart. You should run 4 or 5 drives in the array so that you have a little more redundancy, plus it speeds the network up. Just some late night rambling thoughts. Also, check the stats for each NIC in the server, look for CRC errors, runts, yadda yadda yadda... If you see a large number of errors on one segment, you will be able to narrow down the offending NIC. Mike Haney <haneym@rcc.on.ca> wrote in article <36DECCC8.B64EDF2C@rcc.on.ca>... > Hey there... I am afraid that unless Novell knows of a problem (un like brand X Novell will tell you) you got a problem. I know you did all the re do service pack to overwrite the nlms . when you say freze even the screen saver on console. Over the last 30 years when iI have a problem like this ,it usaly is not the OS.OSs will abend, crash, or do other strange things. I would look at hardware memory, cpu motherboard or power supply. A loss of 5 volts for a few nano sec will do it . Swap the dims around . latch probe on 5 volt line will catch it. flakey conection . over heated cpu . I 'de realy look at hardware if the screensaver stoped too. If it's still runing (screen saver) than it's not dead. PS I like to segment a network by using multible nics better than a switch and we dont need peer to peer browsing all over and it's a lot cheaper. Checkout a possible temperature problem. I have found that when the machine just stops overheating can be a cause. Make sure all the fans are running and clean out any dust etc. Just another suggestion. Mike Haney wrote in message <36DECCC8.B64EDF2C@rcc.on.ca>... >Hey there...
