Claude Steele, Stanford Univ "A theory of stereotype vulnerability and the school outcomes of women and black Americans" When women fail at math or when African-American and Latino students fail at almost any academic task, the stereotypes of society pose the disturbing interpretation that the failure reflects a gender of ethnicity-based inadequacy. The central hypothesis of our research is that vulnerability to stereotype-based judgments of this sort has been an underappreciated cause of the school achievement problems faced by these groups. Our experimental research examines the performance differences on difficult standardized tests. The results of this research suggest that stereotype vulnerability is a major contributor to the differences in standardized test performance between men and women in mathematics and between blacks and whites in all content areas. Further research shows that factors which alleviate this vulnerability can dramatically improve the test performance and school achievement of these groups.
