Neural Mechanisms Underlying Perception of Music & Speech

Robert Zatorre
Montreal Neurological Institute
McGill University

Music and speech are perhaps the most interesting and complex ways
that sound is used by the human cognitive system. It seems likely that
such processes would demand a correspondingly complex set of neural
computations. This talk will report research on these issues using
two complementary techniques: experimental studies in patients
with focal cortical lesions, and positron emission tomography (PET)
studies of functional activation in normal subjects. Converging evidence
from these studies provide an initial description of how specialized
neural networks allow us to perceive, remember and imagine speech and
music.
