Mr Spradlin,
I would like to address two points. The first, your
statement "The police are always the bad guys until someone
robs your house right." You have a valid point, unfortunately,
what most poeple fail to realize, the government is what gives
the police the power over the citizens. This allows the bad
apples in any police force to abuse their power, thereby making
all police look bad. There are many officers which are decent
and would not think about abusing the awesome power with which
they are entrusted, but then again, they are only human and
humans are corruptable. If the power of the police were
limited, they would have a tougher time to abuse their power
and thus have an easier time retaining an untarnished image.
What does an officer abuse in order to sully the reputation
of the police? A law. Your second statement "Get real, don't
do anything illegal and you have nothing to worry about." is
rather shocking if you truly belive this. In order for
something to be illegal, it means that the law must say that you
can do said act. Therefore, the mere ownership of spraypaint
cans can be made into an illegal act at the stroke of a pen.
I assure you, as silly as my exapmle is, some localities have
surely thought of this as a means to curb grafiti. Now expand
that example a little. Some genius in office says that the best
way to reduce crime is to keep an eye on everyone. Therefore,
everyone must phone the police, if they are leaving town. Under
your statement, "...don't do anything illegal and you have
nothing to worry about", we should automatically capitulate to
these unreasonable requests, because if you aren't doing
anything wrong, why worry. How long will it be before the most
simple act is considered to be illegal?
I have no problem with people posting "Missing Persons"
queries to the net, as long as the goverment is limited in what
it can do to citizens outside of their direct interference in
others lives.
Good day,
