Rochester Chapter of the ACM, January Meeting

SPEAKER: Kevin Parker, University of Rochester
TITLE: Halftones and Fax Transmission

DATE: Wednesday, January 27, 1993
           SOCIAL: 5:30 p.m.
           DINNER: 6:30 p.m.
           TALK: 7:30 p.m.

LOCATION: Tony Roma's
           125 White Spruce Blvd, Rochester
(across East Henrietta Road from Monroe Community
           College)

ABSTRACT: A number of advances in halftoning have led to
improvements in the visual appearance of binary images.
Prof. Parker will describe recent algorithms and halftone
screens, with applications to color printing.

What's the best way to transmit an image by fax? Since
fax printers are black and white (binary), a gray scale
image must be halftoned before transmission. A visually
appealing mosaic of black and white in a halftone image
has little redundancy and short run lengths of pixels.
This "busy" pattern of black and white pixels will
confound the standard fax compression codes which work
well with conventional text. Prof. Parker has developed
a novel method of "preencoding" the halftone pattern for
           improved compression and reduced transmission.

BIOGRAPHY: Kevin Parker has a BS in engineering science from SUNY
Buffalo, and an MS and PhD in electrical engineering from
MIT. In 1981, he joined the faculty of EE at the U of R
and built a research program in medical imaging,
ultrasound, and image processing. Currently he is
Professor and Chair of Electrical Engineering, and
Director of the Center for Biomedical Ultrasound. He has
patents issued or pending in contrast agents for medical
imaging, halftoning techniques, and Doppler ultrasound
           techniques.

COST: There is no charge for the talk. If you would like to
attend the dinner, call ACM Reservations at 254-2350 by
