Regarding method of payment for Metro/mass transit:

The whole currency issue may be moot in a couple of years.  While
surfing one day I came across a blurb about a major bank's plan to
test market a "Visa Cash" card for use in the Atlanta area for the
Olympics and it appears that they are already on the market in that
area.  I sent an e-mail to the bank about when they would be using it
in the DC market and their response was a couple of  years.

Once it gets here though, it could provide another option for the
currency impaired.  The farecard machines could be modified to accept
them and ultimately, booths might be able to accept them directly.

It is essentially a "credit card" version of the Metro ticket.  The
cash cards have thier own intrinsic value that is not attached to a
persons account and therefore the risk of theft is limited to the
value remaining on the card.  Merchants would have to get new credit
card readers that can update the remaining value on the cards and no
call-in is required (I think).
