I'm sending this note out to most of the newsgroups that I regularly post(I already posted to m.t.u-t and phl.transportation). If you see that the beginning sig. of my newsposts is a little different, well, there's a reason. My sister and I have been getting hit big time with spam mail, and we're trying some different approaches to combat this.(Some of us may also consider other posts on here as spam, and some may call this spam, but I'm sure that all of the regulars on the groups that are getting this post are getting spam, and are doing what they can to combat it.) Also, I'm trying another end sig., as part of the efforts. If you don't see the traditional end of my post, then I'll know that that part didn't work. Just a personal note(any help out there?...Colin...Even Big Don?) Later Michael T. Greene Because of the influx of junk mail, send all e-mail responses to the following address: mgreene@voicenet.com@removethisbeforemailing

I'm following up on this article publicly, because it's becoming a common problem and many of us are experiencing the same problems. Changing the address in the signature file is a nice backup step, but I understand that most of the junk mail programs that browse newsgroups picking up addresses for e-mail spam are picking the addresses from the "From:" and "Reply-to:" headers on the articles. This is much easier than trying to decipher random signature files. If you have any capability of changing these two lines, you can probably cut down on your junkmail significantly. Yours were not altered from the normal on this article. Also be warned that some spammers are picking up this info from Web site visits as well. But I still get spam. My spam probably no doubt comes from the "From:" header, since I also don't have a "Reply-to" header. I've always suspected that the spammers have been getting my address from there. And I've also begun to suspect that Web site visits have been compounding the problem. Attention anyone who posts technical information here: Please consider those of us who are purely end users and neither know UNIX nor have access to a shell account on our providers. If at all possible, if you are going to give advice on how to change any information, if there's a way to do it via an end-user browser/mailer/newsgroup reader such as Netscape Navigator, PLEASE, give this information, too. Thanks. <No signature line here>

:Changing the address in the signature file is a nice backup step, but I :understand that most of the junk mail programs that browse newsgroups :picking up addresses for e-mail spam are picking the addresses from the :"From:" and "Reply-to:" headers on the articles. If you mangle your from/reply to lines you will block legitimate replies from people who dont know how to fix them, and from people who dont want to waste time fixing them. Whether this bothers you is a matter of personal opinion, of course. Just something to be aware of.
