BTW it's woth noting there was no phase-in period for the DC farecards. One day it just happened. Now they have folks with nothing better to do devising things like marketing because only 10% use it. Well, NYC couldn't do like WDC cuz NYC stations needed work to be able to handle the new farecards (power lines esp bad). So now they're wasting time "marketng" the cards. Dumb! If you can't get on w/o card, you'll buy a card.

Wrong, It was at least two weeks before the blue line opened in 1977 that the Washington Metro which at the time only had the Red Line open between Dupont Circle and Rhode Island Ave. stations riders had the option of using the then farebox based fare system or using the farecards at that time the fare was 40 cents for off peak and 55 cents for peak fares. When the blue line was open in July of that year farecards were the rule but during March of 1976 and June of 1977, the only way to pay your fare was via either exact change or bus transfer (plus 15 cents surcharge during rush hour!)
