Critical massers, psychotic motorists

I've been reading, with great delight, some of the deranged
frothing from motorists in the wake of last week's Critical
Mass battle in San Francisco. All the usual elements of
Monoxide Machismo are richly present: bloodthirsty reveries
of murder and mayhem, low-risk long-distance chest-beating,
etc.

I can't stress too much how important it is for cyclists and other
transportation activists _not_ to be upset by this. It is not a bad
thing. On the contrary: it shows that the CM folks (hats off to them)
have finally succeeded in penetrating the cloud of obliviousness
in which most people's minds are deeply plunged on all issues
relating to transportation.

Of course the folks don't get it; of course they don't have a clue
what we want, or why we're so pissed off; of course their initial
reactions are going to run the gamut from puzzlement to rabies.
That's only to be expected. It's a long and toilsome process to
widen the opening thus created, to follow up the initial attention-
getting shock with discourse that will enlighten and persuade.

But it can be done. And the kind of nuttiness that's been pouring
out on the newsgroups and mailing lists merely demonstrates that
the first, necessary step has been taken.

We know your goal: the abolishment of the automobile. You, like all
communists, want to force your ideology down everyones' throats.

All your lame terrorism did was piss everyone off. Do you really think
you're goint to win over motorists or public transport users by snarling
up traffic? What will it take to give YOU the clue? Your mother dying
becuse the ambulance was stuck in traffic by you Communist Morons?

I don't like going to work sweaty, and the bicycle messengers should be
outlawed. Didn't your mother tell you not to play in traffic? Don't bitch
if you get hurt, commie.

I am sure that you have something rational to say. However, you destroy most of
your own cedibility when you call people inappropriate names. What in the world
would make you think that persons who protest for change are Communists? It is
obvious that you have no concept of the history of protest in this nation, or the
nature of Communists and Communism.

I want to say your hatred towards communists proves just how prejudiced you
are. In theory communism is a wonderful form of government, but then so is
democracy. It's just in the real world where it falls apart. We don't
even have true democracy in this country, if we did things would be in a
much worse state than they are now. I agree in practice communism is a
worse form of government than a republic, but I don't think anyone who
believes in communism should be put in jail, or burned at the stake, or
whatever you feel they deserve.

The next thing is we don't want to abolish cars, we just want the people
driving to look at us with the same respect they do other road users. In
fact you seem to be trying to force us to use cars, forcing your views down
OUR throats. All we want is for you to respect our beliefs.

Again with the communists...did they kill your dog as a child or something,
or were you just a part of the evil McCarthy era?

Then don't go to work sweaty, if we can find away around that what does it
matter? Maybe if you weren't such a lard ass you wouldn't be so sweaty.
Why should bicycle messangers be banned, you want thousands of vans
clogging the streets instead? I agree some are assholes, maybe there
should be some sort of license for them but don't ban them all.

Finally, you play in traffic just as much, but you use a big heavy car so
you can shove those of us who choose different means around. Please stop
calling us all communists, your actions are the ones that most resemble
your stereotype, and if I come over to your house and shot you don't whine
if you get hurt.

Just for the record I don't believe in communism, but I seriously dislike
when people blindly spout off retoric because they're view is "morally
superior".

The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all
possible worlds, and the pessimist fears that this is true.

You are misguided, Mr. Smith. I ride my bike to work about half the
time. I have enough problems with drivers as it is; I don't see
how it helps me to have folks who are already highly stressed
worked up to a homocidal rage against bicyclists. I'd like to
stay alive, thank you very much. In a contest between a psychotic
motorist and a pissed-off bicyclist, who do you think is going to win?

Now, imagine this alternative: a mass ride is staged in a way that
does *not* appreciably disrupt traffic: e.g. four-lane or wider
roads are chosen, everyone rides in the right lane so emergency
vehicles and traffic can still get by, traffic laws are obeyed,
large numbers of boring middle class people participate, have fun,
and decide, "Hey! Riding a bike in the city could work for me!".
Positive press is generated, awareness is raised, more people get
out of their cars and get into bikes.

But no, a lot of the folks who are getting their jollies from the
big CM mess are overgrown macho boys who, if their upbringing had
been a bit different, would be militia types frothing at the mouth
against the Zionist Occupied Government or something. The impulse
is the same: too much testosterone, not enough maturity, folks drunk
on power over others.

That is, to a lot of CM'ers it's more important to throw a big fat
monkey wrench into the system than to improve conditions for bicyclists.

Nobody would even notice its presence, particularly the media. Such
protests are not about getting a few hundred motorists to notice you along
the route; they are about getting your 30 second sound bite on the 6:00 TV
newscast seem by hundreds of thousands of people. The exercise is
pointless if you don't get this exposure.

It's the George Steinbrenner school of PR thought: It doesn't matter if
they're saying good things about you, or bad things. The important thing
is that they are always talking about you.

Or as a veteran agitator friend of mine used to say, "There's no
such thing as bad publicity."

Ah ha!!! Now I get it!! Insect Penis is really an angry cyclist, making
fun of the
ulcer ridden sheep of our society by pretending to be one of them. That
explains
why nothing he says makes any sense.

There are many powerful conservative voices in the world with whom I
would fear to
battle with (i.e. W.F. Buckley or my uncle Clark. ;) ) Guess who isn't
on that list?
My faith that the there is hope for social evolution is fanned by the
roaring stupidity
& hatred of misguided anger.
