Digital - Signs agreement with Hughes Aircraft
{The Wall Street Journal, 13-Aug-92, p. ?}
{Contributed by: Mary Mistovich}
Hughes Aircraft Co. signed a milestone pact in its costly bid to take the
lead in the market for direct satellite-to-home TV service, hiring Digital
Equipment Corp. and Network Computing Corp. to provide billing services.
The deal, to be announced today by the Direc-Tv unit of Hughes, has a value
of as much as $100 million over 10 years to the contracting companies.
Digital, based in Maynard, Mass., will serve as prime contractor and provide
hardware. Network Computing, based in Charlotte, N.C., will provide software
services.
The agreement, however, has a greater significance for Hughes. The aerospace
unit of General Motors Corp., which is investing about $500 million in the
project, now has put in place all the system hardware needed for a service
that it hopes will attract 10 million subscribers to the 150-channel operation
by the end of the decade and eventually compete with cable-TV systems....
For Digital, the nation's second-largest computer maker, the agreement opens
a new systems-integration market. Digital is looking at this area to broaden
its business base, said John O'Keefe, vice president of Digital's U.S.
Complementary Solutions Organizations group. He said that while the size of
the new business is being valued at $100 million, that represents a
conservative estimate, and "we think the contract is almost unlimited" in
revenue potential.
Digital - Ex-Digital employee admits parts role
{The Boston Globe, 22-Aug-92, p. 21}
A former Digital warehouse supervisor pleaded guilty in US District Court
yesterday to six counts of interstate transportation of stolen property -
computer boards. As part of the plea agreement, Joseph McGee, 46, of
Leominster, is expected to testify for the government at the trial of 11
co-defendents, including the alleged mastermind of the theft, Philip Mario
Carnovale. The trail is scheduled to start Sept. 8 and Judge Douglas P.
Woodstock scheduled McGee's sentencing for Nov. 5. McGee was one of 16 persons
indicted in July 1991 in the multimillion-dollar scheme to steal computer
boards from Digital. McGee is the fifth defendant to plead guilty in the case.
McGee, a Digital employee for 20 years, faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in
jail and a $1.5 million fine for the six counts. The government is
recommending a sentence between 30 and 37 months, with additional reductions
if his testimony is helpful. The stolen computer parts, which were sold for
more than $6 million, were shipped to California and elsewhere.

UPS goes Cellular
United Parcel Service has forged an alliance of cellular carriers to
provide immediate tracking capability for its air and ground movements.
Early next year, 50,000 UPS delivery vehicles will be equipped with
cellular equipment that will transmit package information from the
vehicles via USPnet, the company's worldwide telecomm network. "We
have the fleet, we have the worldwide computer communications, and now
we have the nation's first cellular data network," says Gene Hughes,
UPS' VP of strategic technology planning.
After customers sign the Delivery Information Acquisition Device that
UPS drivers carry, drivers then place the device into a custom-made
adapter. Data is transmitted automatically via cellular modem to the
UPSnet packet switch and then to a mainframe at UPS' information
services headquarters in New Jersey.
