Microsoft Word 97 keeps the total page width constant as you adjust the number of columns, width of each column and gaps between columns. So because there is the requirement to keep the page total width constant, you can adjust all width variables except one which is automatically adjusted for you to keep the page width constant. Because of this it seems impossible to get the width spacing on the second column of labels correct. So it seems the easiest way to print is to design a single column of labels (leaving the Microsoft force formatted half of the page blank) , and put the two column sheet through the computer twice (with a 180 degree rotation of the label sheet between insertions) to allow printing two columns of labels. Once each individual label is formatted into two columns, the label text seems to jump automatically into the first column. If you then insert Clipart (while the cursor is inside each individual label) onto the page, it typically is way too big to fit on the label. But by selecting the Clipart you can resize it and as this happens the text almost magically seems to jump into the first column that you created within the label, while the existing text jumps across to the second column. One can lay out the text in multiple labels easily (by clicking the option 'Full Page of Same Label' in the Envelopes and Labels sub Menu under [TOOLS]). But if you have to put the same picture in each label, it seems the Clipart must be put individually into each label. It is also necessary to check that when the Clipart is inserted the 'Float over Text' option is NOT ticked. So I think that I have figured out a process that will work with 'Clipart'. Now the problem. I want to do the same thing as I did with 'Clipart', with an ordinary *.gif file. I can insert the *.gif with no problems. But it inserts itself into the same column which contains the text, whereas I want to put it into the blank column next to the text. So why not place the cursor into the blank column and hit 'Insert' I hear you say? That is the bit of my problem I haven't told you about. Although I can create two columns within a label I cannot access the second column! I know the second column is there because I can force Clipart to jump into it. Why can't I do with an ordinary *.gif file what I can do with 'Clipart'? Any ideas?
