Digital - National Merit Scholarship test dates scheduled
	{Livewire, U.S. News, 2-Sep-92}
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has set two test dates for the
PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test). This test must be taken by high school Juniors in order to
be considered for a National Merit Scholarship.
The test will be given on either Saturday, October 17 or Thursday, October
22 at secondary schools that choose to offer it. Juniors should contact their
high school counselors immediately after the beginning of the school year to
make arrangements to take the test.
NMSC reviews all PSAT/NMSQT's taken by high school Juniors, and, based on
those results, selects the semifinalists. These students will receive an
application package, through their high school, in the fall of their Senior
year. In order to be considered for a scholarship, every semifinalist must
fulfill additional requirements specified by NMSC to advance to finalist
 standing.
Digital dependents are identified by National Merit from information
requested in the application package - no other entry form is needed. Digital
scholarship recipients must be dependents of permanent, regular (full-time)
Digital employees working for the company at the time of acceptance.
Winners are selected by National Merit on a competitive basis without regard
to family financial circumstances. The stipend for each Digital Merit
Scholarship is determined individually by NMSC and can range from the minimum
of $500 to the maximum of $2,000 per year for up to four years of
undergraduate study. All phases of the competition, including the selection of
winners and payment of Merit Scholarship stipends are handled for Digital by
 National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
For more information on the Digital/National Merit Scholarship Program,
contact Joanne Urgotis @MSO, DTN 223-6083.

                     Electric Current Disinfects Blood

Dr. Steven Kaali, a gynecologist at Albert Einstein college of Medicine
in the Bronx, has patented what he believes is a way to kill viral
infections by exposing blood to weak electric currents. The basic
principle is simple: electric current as strong as that used by a
cardiac pacemaker will immobilize a virus but appears weak enough to
leave the much larger blood cells unharmed. Thus far, the hospital has
conducted laboratory tests in conjunction with Baxter International Inc.
on blood infected with the AIDS virus. The blood was pumped to a
location between two platinum electrodes, and Dr. Kaali said that about
95% of the viruses had lost their infectious ability after a six minute
exposure to a current of about 100 millionths of an amp.

Dr. Kaali and Peter M. Schwolsky, a lawyer, received patent 5,139,684.
Patents are available by number for $3 from the Patent and Trademark
    Office, Washington D.C. 20231
