Mike McBain wrote: <...about HTML, SGML and XML...> Maybe that's where HTML is heading and where it once was when it was simple but in the "browser wars" lots of presentation control has been added to HTML. And they do stupid things like measure distance in pixels. One of the big mistakes was assuming that content providers (read that as "advertising agencies") are okay with the viewers (web surfers) controlling the presentation (via their browser). These people want control over the look. They don't want Johnny using 15pt Times-Splendido-Offputting for headings, they want their product to look the way they want it to look. Hence the huge numbers of images embedded in pages or pages that only contain one large image map which the graphic artist prepared in PhotoShop. Now of course these people aren't the only ones using HTML but they're out there and structural markup without style sheets to control its look (which is where HTML is mostly at today giving the number of older browsers in use) doesn't cut it for them. The idea is sound but the implementation was lousy. -- Andy Newman
