Must remember those lines when I decide not to make my pages HTML 4
compliant, and *my* customer asks why *his* customers using Lynx and
Win 3 can't access the pages paid for.

IMO, this is the different between Webdesigners (who create wonderful
and compatible pages) and people who think they are web designers because
they can produce a page that will render in their own browser. Which is
why I'll always be able to earn money from discerning purchasers of web
pages.
Jim proceeds from a false assumption: that compatability and creativity
are incompatible. In fact the opposite is the case. Why would I want to
create a wonderful, functional work that is only viewable on 15" monitors
on Win 95, with Browser 3.1, with toolbars off, Java on, running at
800x600. Duoh.

Remember to ask that question again, when
* webTV really takes off
* when I'm busing browsing on my Nokia phone
* when people wonder why they can't print your pages, even though they
look good.
* when people try to project your page on a 100 foot wide screen and find
your pages is two feet wide and fixed fonts :-)
Which is why Soda's rantings http://www.soda.co.nz about white space is so
misguided.
Its a USER setting, dummy. The user rules.
Followups set.
