The computer I purchased from Gateway about two years ago certainly
did not have a custom motherboard or BIOS. The motherboard was a
rebadged Intel AL440LX, probably one of the most common motherboards
about. The only thing custom about the BIOS was the Gateway 2000
logo. If you don't like it you can use flash it with the Intel
supplied BIOS.

The computer was about as common as you can get, with no custom parts.
The only thing most of those parts were rebranded as Gateway.
Although I would not recommend purchasing from Gateway because of
their crap service.

I agree, boards i have seen have been stock made stuff, not even
re-engineered bios's (say like Dell)

I cannot see why a p2-400 m/b cannot have a p3-550 chip fitted off hand. The
make of board needs to be identified and a bios flash maybe needed that is
probably all.

If your that worroed replace the board at the same time, I would be
surprised if it isnt a stock ATX one
