Oops, low level formatted IDE Hard-drive

Hi Folks,

Can anyone
help me
recover a
Conner
CP30104H
IDE Hard
Drive from
a low
 level
format?

I was
preparing
the hard
drive for
installati
on to my
computer
and
 used the
AMIBIOS
hard drive
format
utility,
oops,
didn't I
read some-
 where
that IDE
hard
drives
shouldn't
be low
level
formatted
and that
 some
drives had
to be
returned
to the
manufactur
er if they
were? :-)

Does
anyone
have a
programme
to aid in
bringing
this hard
drive back
 to life.
 The
computer
doesn't
recognise
it and
Windows
3.1 says
 that it
doesn't
like the
HD's
driver.

My system
is a
486SX25,
4Mb ram,
AMI bios,
running
MsDOS 6.22
and
 Windows
3.1.

Many
thanks in
advance.
Any
assistance
would be
much
appreciate
d.
 Thankyou.

Shane
Roberts.

the drive is probably fine, most IDE drives interpret the low-level
format to mean, write zeros to the tracks. the thing is, you've
wiped out ALL of your data, and i believe the best you can hope
for is to re-partition and re-format the drive. you need a bootable
floppy disk with FDISK and FORMAT on it. use FDISK to partition
the drive and FORMAT /S to format and transfer the system files
to the hard disk. otherwise, you're gonna need the the MS-DOS
or PC-DOS install diskettes.

i think you can kiss your data good-bye, unless you can afford
to pay a fortune to some disk/data recovery service. it's not
likely much of anything can be recovered.

hmm, i'm not sure, but maybe Norton Disk Doctor or something like
that can rebuild the partition if it hasn't been completely wiped.

good luck, and next time, pay ATTENTION to what you're doing!

And you need to return yours. It seems yours wants to quote the
entire stupid message after your response.

Wait a minute, I count five in yours. And before you say anything
to me, mines got 9 lines if you count the two blanks at the
beginning, but since I only post about one third as much as I'd
like to, it all averages out. :)

Using an ultra-low resolution terminal, are we? :-)

As far as your problem goes, I think you're going to have to contact Connor
on this. The dealer you bought the drive from should be able to help on that
one; or search the web if you have access.

You should be able to recover by simply doing a DOS FDISK and
re-formatting the drive. No data will be recoverable but the drive
should be OK.

Are you sure ? Cause I stuffed a Quantum 1.27Gb Fireball through ignorance doing a
BIOS low level format on it. And no matter how I fdisk or DOS format the drive, it
didn't work. Got it fixed eventually by getting it low-level formated by a program.
NOT from BIOS.

It *may* be fixed if you manage to get the low level formatting program from the
manufacture.

Most newer HDD's now wont let you do a real low level format so it
probably is all right. Just fdisk it to set the primary dos partition
and make it active and away you go. Format and load everything up
again. i do it all the time, its the easiest way to start fresh.
I bought a program called Micrscope that really does do a low level
format, one of the very few that can do it properly..

Thankyou to everyone that replied to my posting to this newsgroup. FDISK was
all that was needed to recover this disk drive. The data was intentionally
wiped from the drive so I wasn't concerned about losing it.

For anyone following this thread, I have just re-read a magazine article that
states, with regard to IDE drives:- "In addition, IDE drives usually operate
at a 1:1 interleave. You cannot change interleave, perform a low-level
format, or run low-level disc utilities." (extract from Computer Bits column,
Silicon Chip, October 1992.)

Caution, there is still some doubt as to whether the foregoing applies to all
IDE drives (In my mind, at least. :-)).

Finally, apologies for the extremely short lines in the original article. I
don't know what happened to cause that.

Cheers,

Shane.

Shane, here's what I know. The response of an IDE drive to the format
command is not well defined. Various drives may format the track, may
do it badly, or may just come back with either "done" or "error".

Some IDE drives have a mode to write the track that is not accessed by
normal software. That encoding method might be proprietary. Western
Digital Drives seem to need a special program to low level format
them. It is supposed to take forever.

Best advice, do not low level format an IDE drive unless you _know_ it
can be done properly, or you have access to the manufacturer's low
level formatting software.

Not a problem on MFM, RLL, ESDI drives. I think you need some special
software for SCSI drives, mostly to talk to the drivers.

Harvey

With SCSI drives you say "Format thyself" and the drive does everything
itself. Many (most) SCSI PC HDD controller cards these days have BIOS
level access to this stuff (I don't mean cheap old junk like ST-02 cards)

Now if only I could find a nice *cheap* source for the extra Barracudas
I need and someone to buy/swap my 2940 so I can get a 3940. :)
