Lava lamp ( help resurrecting one please)

I was given a lava lamp a few months ago, which isn't bubbling too well.
Instead of the wax bubbling once the lamp gets hot, it just rises up
into a sort of wave.
(I think they are also called bubble lamps)

Does anyone know what the "wax" and "water" actually are?
(Judging by the smell, I think that the wax is some form of heavy
 petroleum grease.)

Apparently at some point during its life the lamp was stored on its side
and leaked. The owner topped it off with tap water, and "It's never been
the same since...."

If anyone can provide info to help me restore it to its former glory(?)
I'd be grateful. (Timewarped acid freak that I am.....:-)
It was made in NZ and I think it's around 15 years old.

I'm pretty sure the liquid is paraffin oil and the solid stuff some
form of wax.

I had a friend who had a similar experience, she topped hers up with
meths, because thats what she thought it smelt most like.

It melted all the gooey bits inside the lamp which didn't help it at all.

They can be refilled at some lighting shops, in Christchurch she was quoted
$65. In the end she found another one at a garage sale for $10.

Good luck.

I am not exactly an expert on these things, but from experience in the States
in the last couple of years, where these things are becoming pretty popular
again, I know a few facts... (well I was told they were facts :)

1.	If the lamp is left on continuously for more than a couple of months
the wax will become more solid, hence the "sort of wave".
2.	If the glass breaks, you are advised not to touch the stuff inside.
Don't know why, but there must be a reason.
3.	The red ones seem to retain their fluidity longer than the blue, or
other coloured ones.
4.	New lamps are selling in Boston for about $US45 (a long way to go if
you can't find one here!)
