Hardly an example of bad intolerance.

The various magazine articles on the emigration from California
note that as soon as the Californians settle into another state,
some (particularly the most influential) of them start advocating 
gun control, expanded social services, etc., ad nauseum, with the
assumption that this will prevent a California from recurring.
The magazines are of course most sympathetic to these individuals.

In short, they wish to recreate the political and social conditions
that created California's mess.  The locals are wise to assume that
a Californian is a problem until proven otherwise.

If emigrating Californians stepped real hard on the activists,
rejecting them at every turn, the ire would be directed where it
belongs.
