UUASC
Unix Users Association of Southern California
December Meeting
---------------------------------------------
Linux, Samba, and the Dark Side
---------------------------------------------
Monday, December 14, 7-9 pm
I B M
600 Anton Bl, second floor, Costa Mesa
(NW corner of Anton and Av of the Arts)
IMPORTANT NOTICE - This month is our second in our new meeting
location. IBM is now sponsoring our meetings. The address is above;
for details, including parking instructions, see below.
Many of us work everyday in heterogeneous environments where Unix systems
must interface with Windows machines and networks. One way to make that
job a lot easier is to use Samba, an open-source reimplementation of
Windows SMB (server message block) networking. Samba is reported to do a
better job of Windows networking than Windows itself (surprise).
At the UUASC December meeting, member Kevin Long will tell us about his
experiences using Samba on the job. His presentation will show configuring
a Samba server that is already installed, with pertinent parameters, and
cover some "gotchas" that he's come across. He will also show what how to
configure a Windows 95 PC to work with Samba. At the end of the session,
we'll have a Windows box connected to a Samba box.
The UUASC is for all persons using Unix either personally or professionally,
or interested in learning more about Unix. We recognize all varieties of
Unix, including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, and BSD.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden your
skills and knowledge. Generally, meetings include a technical presentation
on a hardware or software topic of current interest to the Unix community
and a round-table discussion of current topics of interest to the group.
We are always looking for interesting presentations and your suggestions
are most welcome.
Please join us this month and bring along your friends or co-workers. Also,
please forward this announcement to others who may be interested and feel
free to post it on BBSs, both electronic and physical. If you receive more
than one announcement by email, please let us know so we can keep our lists
current. Thanks for listening.
