TOPIC: CDMA - A Look under the hood at
Cellular, PCS, and LEO Mobile Communications
SPEAKER: Dwight Borses
Please join the IEEE Communications Society on March 23 to gain a
qualitative understanding of the workings of Code Division Multiple
Access technology as it applies to cellular, personal communications
systems, and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Globalstar Satellite mobile
communications. The meeting will be held jointly with the Computer
Society and Signal Processing Chapters at the Wyndham Gardens Hotel.
Speaker Dwight Borses will provide key insights into CDMA technology by
contrasting alternate multiple access technology and exploring the
advantages of direct sequence spread spectrum techniques as they apply
to commercial CDMA. The talk will include a brief look at the service
provider technology choices to demonstrate the growth and acceptance of
the technology, a look at how multiple diversity approaches enhances
reliability, and a description of the signaling, control, and management
functioning. Mr. Borses will specifically discuss power management,
critical to the proper operation of CDMA, soft and softer hand-offs that
increase call reliability, and recent enhancements in the vocoder
implementation. The presentation will include a look at block diagram
implementations of handsets and base-stations, and will conclude with
an introduction to wide band, third generation technology development.
Mr. Borses, a Senior Member of the IEEE, is an MTS Field Applications
Engineer, and has been with National Semiconductor for eleven years. He
is the current Chair of the OC Communications Society chapter and
Interim Chair of the OC Signal Processing chapter. He is a past officer
of the OC Computer Society and Los Angeles Council, is an industry
advisor to Cal State Fullerton's Continuing Education program, and is a
Technical Program advisor for WESCON '98. Mr. Borses is a registered
professional engineer in Control Systems. He been a frequent speaker at
IEEE technical meetings throughout Southern California, has been a guest
lecturer at Cal State LA and UC Irvine, and has presented papers at the
Multimedia Technology and Applications Conference MTAC '96 and 97. He
received his BS and MS in Engineering from UC Irvine.

TOPIC: TurboCodes: New Perspectives on Approaching the Shannon Limit
SPEAKER: Dr. Audrey Viterbi, Qualcomm, Inc.
NOTE: We will be hosting a special information session on the
WESCON conference and trade show for 15 minutes before our regular
technical presentation.
The last few years have witnessed a significant decrease in the gap
between the Shannon channel capacity limit and what is practically
achievable. Progress has resulted from novel extensions of previously
known coding techniques involving interleaved concatenated codes (turbo
codes). Most of the early results were based primarily on simulations.
While the elegant exponential bounds of information theory have not yet
been shown to hold for turbo codes, tight numerical bounds have been
placed on their performance. Dr. Viterbi will first discuss how
conventional union bounds can be applied and then proceed to derive a
new improved bound which, when computed numerically, yields results
which closely support the existing simulations.
Audrey M. Viterbi holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and
Computer Science and the B.A. degree in Mathematics from the University
of California, San Diego. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in
Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. She
was an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the
University of California, Irvine from 1985 to 1990.
In 1990 she joined Qualcomm, Inc., San Diego, where she is currently a
principal engineer involved in the development of the CDMA cellular
telephone system. Her recent research has involved the performance
evaluation of CDMA systems with emphasis on capacity, power control,
handoff and interference issues and turbo codes. Her professional
interests are in the area of modeling and performance evaluation of
computer-communication networks and communication systems. She is a
co-recipient of the 1994 Stephen O. Rice prize paper award and a Senior
Member of the IEEE.

TOPIC: Splitterless DSL
SPEAKER: Mike Henderson
Rockwell calls the technology that Mike Henderson will talk about
"Consumer DSL" (TM). Other terms used in C/Net news stories are
splitterless-DSL, Universal DSL, and DSL-Lite. Mike already has a white
paper on the web at www.nb.rockwell.com/cdsl/index.hmtl .
The technology gives a transmission rate of about 1MB/sec over
installed copper wires from the phone company. This is less than the
6MB that people (e.g. the PairGain talk) were talking about for ADSL,
but is still 20 times 56K and 10 times full base rate ISDN.
"Splitterless" is probably the key aspect of this technology. It means
that the modems which will cost the consumer about $200 can be plugged
into standard phone jacks. ADSL required a splitter and thus a visit
from a phone company technician to install the service. This greatly
increases the cost of installing service.
The low 4KB of spectrum is reserved for standard voice communication.
Therefore, a voice conversation can take place at the same time as data
transmission. Also, the modem is always on for data transmission,
allowing instant notification of email and other benefits.
Although I have been waiting to experience the wonders of some sort of
DSL high-speed data transmission for years, there are indications that
this time it is "for real". See the C/Net feature "How real is DSL?"
for details -- www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,18268,00.html . This is a
collection of their news stories from the last week of Jan.
Microsoft, Intel, and Compaq are all pushing hard for this technology.
Starting with Windows 98, all future versions of Windows will have
support for DSL modems. Compaq is talking about pre-installing DSL
access on machines that they sell.
Mr. Henderson is Marketing Director for Network Access Products at
Rockwell Semiconductor Systems where he is responsible for central site
modems. He joined Rockwell in 1966 after seventeen years with AT&T where
he managed the development of a variety of communications products, most
recently simultaneous voice and data modems. He is an inventor on twelve
patents and patents pending. His present interests are in high speed
access to the home.
