UUASC
Unix Users Association of Southern California
February Meeting
--------------------------------
Comparing Linux Distributions
--------------------------------
Monday, February 9, 7-9 pm
Corollary Inc
2802 Kelvin, Irvine
(one block north of Jamboree and Main)
What is a Linux distribution? Linux is the very popular free operating
system which is very much like Unix. For those not familiar with Linux,
the concept of a "distribution" of Linux can be strange. There are
many and several are fairly popular.
At the UUASC February meeting, Jason Heiss of Collective Technologies
will present an overview of what a distribution of Linux is, and how
the various distributions differ. Jason will explain what choices
someone has to make when building a Linux distribution and what
additional things come with the various distributions. He'll also
present guidance on what distribution is best for your business or your
client's business. Jason believes there is no perfect distribution;
each has things at which it excels.
The UUASC is for all persons using Unix either personally or professionally,
or interested in learning more about Unix. We recognize all varieties of
Unix, including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, and OSF.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden your
skills and knowledge. Generally, meetings include a technical presentation
on a hardware or software topic of current interest to the Unix community
and a round-table discussion of current topics of interest to the group.
We are always looking for interesting presentations and your suggestions
are most welcome.
Please join us this month and bring along your friends or co-workers. Also,
please forward this announcement to others who may be interested and feel
free to post it on BBSs, both electronic and physical. If you receive more
than one announcement by email, please let us know so we can keep our lists
current. Thanks for listening.
Check out the UUASC Web site at http://www.UUASC.org/. Many thanks to
Network Intensive for sponsoring our site.
