				     UUASC
Unix Users Association of Southern California
			        January Meeting

		   ------------------------------------------
                      X Window System Desktop Environments
		   ------------------------------------------

			   Monday, January 12, 7-9 pm
				 Corollary Inc
			      2802 Kelvin, Irvine
(one block north of Jamboree and Main)

The X Window System allows a user to dramatically alter the appearance of
his desktop by substituting a different window manager from that installed
by default with his distribution. Lately, window managers have evolved
into complete desktop environments, including basic tools like a file
manager and a program launcher. Standard Unix promotes the Common Desktop
Environment (CDE) and Linux now has the "K" Desktop Environment (KDE).

At the UUASC January meeting, member Mike Elliott will demonstrate some
of the features of these new environments with a special emphasis on KDE.
If there is a particular desktop environment which appeals to you, please
bring along your reference material, or even your computer, and we'll add
that choice to the discussion mix.

The UUASC is for all persons using Unix either personally or professionally,
or interested in learning more about Unix. We recognize all varieties of
Unix, including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, and OSF.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden your
skills and knowledge. Generally, meetings include a technical presentation
on a hardware or software topic of current interest to the Unix community
and a round-table discussion of current topics of interest to the group.
We are always looking for interesting presentations and your suggestions
are most welcome.

Please join us this month and bring along your friends or co-workers. Also,
please forward this announcement to others who may be interested and feel
free to post it on BBSs, both electronic and physical. If you receive more
than one announcement by email, please let us know so we can keep our lists
current. Thanks for listening.

Check out the UUASC Web site at http://www.UUASC.org/. Many thanks to
Network Intensive for sponsoring our site.
