Hello, A grassroots organization known as the Peninsular Ranges Biodiversity Project (PRBP) has been working toward a cooperative effort with the U.S. Forest Service to restore the natural environment in the Cleveland National Forest located in Southern California. Join us for a Road-Ripping Good Time! We invite all lovers of the natural environment to help rip out some roads and begin restoring areas to their natural state. The dates of this event are December 5,6 and 7th. We have been granted permission by the USFS to camp in an area near the restoration site. The primary work days are Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th. Work will begin at or close to dawn and continue until dusk each day, rain or shine. Items to bring: some food, eating utensils, camping gear (sleeping bag, tent), hat, work gloves, boots shovels and rakes if you got 'em. Camping is primitive, pit-toilets are nearby. PRBD will supply a vegetarian meal Friday and Saturday nights, snacks and water during the day. It's a good idea to bring something special for yourself and a container of water as well. Be prepared, cause there ain't no Taco Bell or McDonalds for quite a distance. This area borders designated wilderness. Through a unique cooperative effort, PRBP has worked with the US Forest Service to close destructive roads in the Cleveland National Forest, benefitting the Forest by removing sources of erosion, despoil the watershed and threaten rare species such as the mountain lions, Arroyo Toads, badgers, golden eagles, and native fish. No experience is necessary to help out. PRBP volunteers and US Forest Service Rangers will work hand in hand to obliterate and scarify the road beds. PRBP volunteers will plant native trees and plants to revegetate the road beds. If you are a high school student or a Scout in need of community service hours, this is an excellent opportunity. You are not required to camp to participate. The area being restored is near the Tenaja/San Mateo Wilderness area in Riverside County. PRBP is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of the Greater Santa Ana Mountain Ecosystem. For additional information or to volunteer, contact PRBP at (714) 639-4715. PO Box 6145, Santa Ana, CA 92706.
