Rather than say "Work our fields, and we will keep you clothed,
sheltered, and fed as terms of servitude", the Democrats now say "Vote
for us, and we will keep you clothed, sheltered and fed as terms of
servitude." One can argue that the change is less substitive than the
Republican alternative, which is to, "Plan ahead, apply yourself, and
you will be able to cloth, shelter, and feed yourself through your own
efforts."

What history book have you not read? Republicans helped blacks hold
office and adminster public affairs during reconstruction. The Jim
Crow laws and the Black Codes went into place after the Republicans
pulled out at the end of reconstruction. One could NOT be a
Republican and a member of the KKK at the same time. The KKK would
only allow Democrats to join. The southern political machines that
kept blacks from voting through poll taxes and literary tests were
exclusively Democratic. After Reconstruction the Republican Party
wasn't even viable in much of the south up until the Reagan
Revolution.

(Honest workman work for the their employer, they don't go on strike,
by definition.)
