An interesting column today, or story, if you will. I guess it's a 
column by Mark Mellman. He's a big Democrat pollster basically conceding 
defeat in this column today. He says, "First, we simply do not defeat an 
incumbent president in wartime. After wars surely but never in their 
midst. Republicans have been spinning this fact for months and they're 
correct. Democrats have spoken often and powerfully about the nation's 
economic problems but by historic standards the economic problems are 
not that bad. The misery index, 7.8 today but it was 20.5 when Carter 
was defeated. Economic models of elections show Bush winning 52 to 58% 
of the vote today. One could simply suggest the models are off but 
there's more to it than that."

He goes on to describe the economic circumstances, says, "They're not 
that bad, certainly not nearly as bad as when incumbent presidents have 
been thrown out of office during wartime." He said, "It just doesn't 
happen." He talks about Bush's approval number, and all the numbers in 
these internal polls as being pretty high for George W. Bush. So he 
basically concludes that "taking all that and more into account an 
export forecasting model will suggest that Bush will get 51.6% of the 
two-party vote." This is Mark Mellman, a Democrat pollster who wrote 
this Sunday in The Hill newspaper.

Now, you might be wondering: Why is this guy got to do this? Why is he 
giving up on Sunday? Why is a Democrat pollster publishing this writing 
this on Sunday and having it published today? The answer is he's a 
pollster; he's got to have credibility when this is all over.
