Personal opinion:  Very short ads would be OK, maybe two short paragraphs
and if the advertiser wants to provide more information, then include a
URL so interested people can get the info off the Web.  Offensive case
in point:  an advertiser recently posted a very lengthy ad to 
seattle.general (and perhaps other newsgroups) -- bad taste.

Some exceptions may be appropriate, such as in rec.pets.dogs.rescue,
many people (including myself) like to see notices of dogs available
for adoption.  

In general, usenet newsgroups should not become an open forum for
commercial advertising.  If they do, I think it is safe to predict that
currently unmoderated groups will become moderated, and advertisers
will find themselves filtered out.
