Hi,
I don't know what to do any more. I'm a senior in high school, and
I have a serious problem with post secondary options.
I am currently a concurrent student at both my high school and The Ohio
State University in Lima. I am attending The Ohio State University under
The Post Secondary Options Program, and I am personally paying for my tuition
and fees. Under current state law, I believe that my high school is obligated
to pay my tuition and fees if requested. I requested that my high school
do so. When I requested that my high school pay for my fees, my request
was refused. The reason for the refusal was a deadline. My problem is
that I did not know that there was a deadline for my request.
The Winter quarter of 1993 will be my fifth quarter at OSU, and the expense
has become unbearable. I have taken two quarters during the summer, which
my high school is not obligated to pay for. Since the Fall quarter of 1992 I
have been a full time OSU Academy Student, as such I am not eligible for
any form of financial aid. I have no trouble with deadlines, except that my
high school knew for a over a year and a half that I would be requesting
this money. Even at the beginning of my junior year of high school, I
specifically told the superintendant that I would be using a post
secondary option. I do not believe that I was ever informed of this
deadline, if
I was informed I was never reminded of this deadline. There are a few
other students from my high school who receive funds from my high school.
I honestly do not understand why my school is refusing my request, while
granting others. The administration of my high school, never mentioned any
deadline to me. OSU tuition
and fees are the best deals in the state and I am doing well, but if I do
not receive assistance and compensation for the past two quarters from
my high school, I will be forced to drop out. I contacted some
administrators of the Columbus City School System who told me that the
deadlines are not set in stone. These same administrators specifically
told me that in cases such as mine the deadlines were waived. The cost for
the past two quarters has been approximately $1800. The next quarter will
cost approximately $1000. These are fees calculated without the cost of
books, transportation, etc. For the past five quarters I have spent
$4600 dollars on my OSU education which is too much to ask any high school
student to personally pay for an education.

                                   Thanks for the advice,
                                        Pravin
