Why won't you understand that what keeps these horrible stations on-air, with the exception of CBC, is advertising revenue. Advertising revenue in turn is generated by listener demand, listener demand is measured by ratings. Therefore, if listeners demanded and would support a station playing All-Elvis music, I guarantee that within 3 months CHUM-FM, CHFI and CKFM would all be pumpin' out Burnin' Love. The stations are very much owned by the public, and are programmed at the very baisc root level of democracy, if you don't want it, you don't listen, if you don't listen, the station switches to a format where you do. >And few private broadcasters provide diversity, integrity and/or >anything but the same tired top40 US format that can win them the most >pizza commercials. Surely we can spare a couple of FM frequencies for >Canadians who already know where they want to order dinner from and >might just have a brain. A few Campus radio stations do that also. The U of T station, Ryersons, et-cetera. What's wrong with listening to them ? Surely they supply all the left wing bleeding heart commentary and 'world music' anyone could stomach ? Yet these stations can't get sponsors to save their lives, because there is no real demand for the programming. There are small envelopes of people who actually care, but in the big picture the stations are inconsequential. >>Do you honestly believe we need two FM CBC outlets in Toronto ? >Yes. Okay, how about 8 outlets ? 1 CBC 94.1 FM for English 1 CBC 90.3 FM for French 1 CBC 740 AM for English 1 CBC Channel 5 TV for English 1 CBC Channel 25 TV for French 1 CBC Cable 26 TV for English News (Newsworld) 1 CBC Cable 54 TV for French News (RDI) And a large share in Showcase television. Isn't that enought for our 'national' broadcaster without taking yet another frequency away from private broadcasting ? Iain.
