"Resource Sharing in Large-Scale Heterogeneous Distributed Systems"
After over a decade of research and development in distributed computing
systems, such systems are gradually finding their way to organizations that
used to do all computing on mainframes and supercomputers. Although the
performance of RISC-based hardware is superior, software for resource
management and sharing in distributed systems is inadequate for the
applications they support. We discuss some of the research issues involved
in turning a network of computers into an integrated computing system for
multiprogrammed execution of parallel as well as sequential applications.
As an example of the kind of software needed for resource management and
sharing, we discuss Load Sharing Facility (LSF), a software system being
developed at the University of Toronto for load sharing in large,
heterogeneous distributed systems.
Songnian Zhou is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Electrical
Engineering at the University of Toronto. Over the years, he has been
working closely with industry on research problems in distributed and
parallel computing systems.
