" Empress Software Technology Directions "

Empress Software Inc. prides itself on being a commercial supplier of
leading-edge relational database management and fourth-generation language
technology. With the release of version 6, Empress provides fully
distributed capabilitites among Empress RDBMSs across a heterogeneous Unix
network. Thus, any application operating on multiple databases on a single
machine can operate without modification on the same databases spread out
across a network of say Suns, HPs, SGIs and Crays. This applies to
updates, joins, transactions, etc.

As part of its effort to maintain a bridge between the advanced ideas
generated by academic research and the demands of the practical user,
Empress will present its future technology directions for the next several
years. These directions include security, internationalization,
networking, multi-media, and object-oriented extensions. Discussion will
centre around the realities of bringing these techonologies to the
marketplace and some of the additional research that this entails. Means
of cooperation between the academic and commercial communities will also be
explored.
