"ORIENTATION EFFECTS IN VISUAL OBJECT PERCEPTION:
SPINNING A NEW YARN USING OLD AND NEW FEATURES."
3 pm, Friday, January 29, 1993
Room 317 of 1 Spadina Crescent,
University of Toronto, St. George Campus.
Abstract:
The time needed to identify objects from two-dimensional depictions
can be affected sharply by the orientation of the depicted object.
The orientation effects have a number of robust characteristics that
will be described in the talk. In particular I will review studies
that
* estimated the magnitude of the effect across different stimulus
materials,
* compared the effect magnitudes in identification experiments
with that in mental rotation experiments,
* explored the shape of the orientation function for pattern recognition,
* measured effects of learning and transfer of learning,
* estimated the orientation of the perceptual frame of reference
used to perform various tasks.
Recent results from a naming task and a top-bottom discrimination
task based on a large sample of subjects will be summarized
and used to evaluate various claims in extant theories of object
perception.
All are welcome. Donut holes at 3, talk at 3:10.
