One of my pet peeves is people who virtuously recycle without thinking of the environmental cost of how they do it. Our garbage company told everybody to remove labels and clean cans, milk jugs etc. To my family that meant using hot water to soak the labels and clean the container. I suspect that what we gained in recycled plastic and metal we lost in energy expenditure. I think they finally almost understand the need to avoid such wasted energy. However there are probably a lot of people out there still sending hot water down the drain every time they recycle a can or milk jug. Like most good ideas, recycling can help but it can also be misused. Unthinking actions are unthinking actions regardless of how virtuous they make us feel.
