Greetings Folks,

The Hindu Students Council at OSU is participating in a nationwide
celebration of India's independence. The renowned speaker, Dr. Yashvant Rao
Pathak will kickoff the festival by sharing his insights on the significance
of the 50th anniversary to India and to us all. There will be a film that
shows the economic and cultural changes that are happening in India today.
And of course there will be Indian food and refreshments.

The festival is this Saturday, May 3 at 2:00 pm in 131 Hitchcock Hall(North
Campus) and it is open to everyone.

Here's what inspired the celebrations:

The year 1997 is very significant for freedom-loving people
everywhere particularly people from the Indian subcontinent. In
1947, India (Bharat) officially gained independence from the British
colonial power. August
15th,1997 marks the fiftieth anniversary of independence of India.

People of Indian descent have gone to many parts of the world and have made
major contributions to their adopted countries. We as people have a lot
more to contribute to the world as we move towards the 21 st. century.
In order to do that we need to know ourselves, our heritage, our roots; and
our rich culture's values and ideals. Therefore, we need to look at our
past and know the events and ideals that shaped us into the way we are today.

Through Freedom Festival 1997, we will learn about India's history,
culture, contributions and people. This festival is as much a
celebration of the independence of India as it is a tribute to the courage
and sacrifice of many great leaders and millions of people that eventually
led to freedom.

HSC invites everyone to participate in the celebrations of Freedom Festival
1997. Let us collectively and individually rejoice in our freedom. Let
us come together and offer our time, energy, and mind for a better future
for us and the world. Let us salute all those who sacrificed their lives
for freedom.

HSC is an international forum for the promotion of Hindu culture and
heritage.
