Mumia Abu-Jamal is currently on death row.
Mumia as a teenager was committed to the liberation of Black people; he
joined the Black Panther Party in Philadelphia in the late 1960s. Later
he turned to broadcast journalism, reporting for the local Philadelphia
radio station. In 1978 he stirred up the wrath of the mayor and ex-police
commissioner, Frank Rizzo, by reporting both sides of the police raid on
the MOVE organization (where 11 MOVE members were convicted for one
kop's murder). Because of his reporting he became known as the "Voice
of the Voiceless." The FBI had been collecting files on Mumia since he
was 15. Seven hundred pages of files later, and with the cooperation of the
Philly cops, the authorities framed him up for the killing of a cop.
The investigation and the trial was full of hatred and racism. Mumia was not
allowed to defend himself or pick his own council. Two of the state's
witnesses were prostitutes with charges against them that were dropped
for testifying against Mumia. The prosecutor brought up Mumia's political
history with the Black Panthers to show that "he had always wanted to kill a
cop," moving the charge from third-degree murder to premeditated first degree
murder. And to top it all off, he had the dishonorable Judge Sabo chairing
his case. Judge Sabo has the distinction of sending the most people to
death row in Amerikkka (31 in all, only 2 white). Needless to say, he was
found guilty
In November of 1994, Pennsylvania elected a tough-on-crime governor.
Mumia was scheduled to be murdered by the state on August 17th, 1995,
but a stay of execution was granted on August 12th. Having lost a request
for a new trial, Mumia's lawyers will be filing an appeal on Feb. 9th.
There are rumors that a new death warrant will be signed before the appeals
can be filed.
