The Ohio State University alumni clubs of Virginia and Washington, DC are
working with the Virginia DMV and The Ohio State University to have Virginia
license plates issued with the Ohio State logo on them. If you live in
Virginia, you have probably seen such plates for schools such as UVa, Va Tech,
JMU, plus out-of-state schools such as Penn State and Notre Dame.

The following information also appears on the web at
http://www.worldweb.net/~jcanterb/vaplates.html. If you have questions about
the program, please contact me via e-mail at jcanterb@worldweb.net. Also, I
realize that so much of what appears on the Net today is a scam of one sort or
another. Fortunately, this is not. For verification, call The Ohio State
University at 614-292-6446 and ask for the Alumni Association Field Office.
They can attest to the validity of this license plate program.

Overview

Are you an Ohio State alumnus or alumna who lives in Virginia? Then like me, you
have probably seen those specialty license plates you can get for your car in
Virginia, with your favorite logo on it such as your university or civic
organization. We have a large Penn State contingent in the DC area, so I see
those quite often. Last week I saw one for Florida State! Why not one for Ohio
State?

I checked into that myself a couple years ago, and found at the time that
Virginia required payment for 1000 plates up front, including the names of the
individuals purchasing the plates. That was a daunting task. Since then, the
rules have been updated. The requirement now is a commitment for 350 plates.

Given that, I say now is the time to get Ohio State plates in Virginia. I have
been in contact with both Virginia DMV and with the OSU Alumni Association to
bring this about. All the details are now worked out, and the program is ready
to begin! I know I plan to buy these tags for myself, and hope that you are as
excited about the prospect of having these as I am.

I am coordinating this effort, but I will need your help. Talk this up with the
OSU alumni you know, and encourage them to participate. In the meantime, if you
have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

How to Apply

The time to apply for these plates is now!

To apply, send a check for $30 for each car ($40 for personalized (i.e.,
"vanity") plates, payable to:

Ohio State Alumni Club of Washington, DC
                             c/o Jerry Canterbury
                           46636 Lynnhaven Square
                            Sterling, VA 20165-6440

Include the following information for each car:

Owner's and co-owner's full printed name and signature
     Owner's address
     Owner's phone number
     Owner's e-mail address
Current plate number, plate type, and expiration date
Car title number and vehicle identification number

Questions and Answers

Here's a brief list of questions and answers to help you keep informed about
this effort.

Q. Who do I contact if I need more information?
A. The best bet is to e-mail me at jcanterb@worldweb.net. Also, bookmark this
page (http://www.worldweb.net/~jcanterb/vaplates.html) and check back every now
and then for changes. And, if you send me your e-mail address, I'll send
updates to you.

Q. Do you have to be an Ohio State graduate to purchase these plates?
A. No. If you have a friend or relative who didn't attend OSU but still loves
the university, they should definitely join us in purchasing these plates.
Parents of current students are especially encouraged to participate.

Q. If this is for the Commonwealth of Virginia, why is the Washington, DC alumni
club involved?
A. As you know, Washington is a small city bordered by Maryland and Virginia. In
fact, two-thirds of the membership of the Washington, DC club lives in Virginia.
Additionally, of all OSU alumni who live in Virginia, over half live in the
Washington, DC membership area.

Q. How much participation do we need?
A. We need a commitment for 350 sets of plates to present to DMV. We need both
the money for 350 plates as well as the names of the individuals who will buy
those plates.

Q. What is the cost per set of plates?
A. The cost for the first year is $30. That includes a $5 non-refundable fee
which will be used for contributions to the scholarship funds of Virginia and DC
alumni clubs, and to cover the administrative costs of starting the program.
After the first year, the renewal fee will be $25.

Q. Can we just write a check for the 350 plates now, then find the people later?

A. According to DMV, no. Don't you wish it were that easy?

Q. How many alumni are there in Virginia?
A. According to the Alumni Association Field Office, just over 5400.

Q. What if I already have personalized "vanity" plates that say GO OSU or have
my name or initials?
A. You can put your personalized plate information on your new OSU logo plate,
with some restrictions. As you know, Virginia plates allow seven digits. The
logo takes up one of those digits. So, your personalized plate information must
use six digits or fewer. So, you could put BUKEYEon the new logo plates (six
digits), but not BUCKEYE (seven digits). Personalized plates cost an
additional $10, for a total of $40 in the first year.

Q. Which logo will appear on the plates?
A. As you are aware, the university uses a number of different logos. The Alumni
Association's logo (shown on the web page) is the one approved for license plate
use and therefore the one that will appear on the Virginia plates.

Q. What if somebody moves out of state after they send their check in but before
they get their plates?
A. Up until the time we send the money into the DMV, we will refund $25 if an
individual moves out of state and notifies us.

No wonder we have 8 zillion random plates in our state. Geez, who's
next in line...the Annandale Cookie Bakers Club? Hell, maybe my
apartment complex should get our own plates. I'm putting a sign-up
sheet downstairs tomorrow!
