About Manipuri and the artistes:
Born in the mountain ranges of the far North eastern corner of India, Manipuri
is one of India's richest and oldest dance forms. Dignified grace and
ethereal beauty is to be found in every aspect of it, and the range it offers
in technique, rhythms and tempo makes a Manipuri recital an absorbing and
exhilarating experience. Known for his great mastery of the art and complete
dedication, Guru Singhajit Singh has distinguished himself as an outstanding
performer, teacher, choreographer and an artist of exceptional creative
ability. A pioneer of Manipuri Ballet, he has created thirty ballets and
numerous dance compositions which have won international acclaim. He was been
awarded the prestigious Homi Bhabha Fellowship and the Padma Shri conferred by
the President of India. Smt. Charu Sija Mathur is also a leading exponent of
Manipuri dance and a recipient of the Delhi Sahitya Kala Parishad award.
